Project HR: Human Resources Management in a Technology-Driven Environment
A New Blueprint for HR Leadership
:: completed list main ::
In today’s increasingly electronic business world, every company must strive to
be both focused and adept at using information technology. So why do some
companies successfully deploy information technology to reduce costs, improve
customer service and increase market share – while other organizations make
similar technology investments with dissimilar results? The answer lies not in
technology, but in the human ability to appreciate, employ and cope with it.
Successful companies approach technology use
holistically, adjusting all facets of their business models – process and work
design, skills, management systems, information systems, and values and beliefs
– in concert. They address the people issues of technology use. The HR
organization has the opportunity and the obligation to enable the corporation to
thrive in this technology-driven business environment. The Information Age
responsibilities of HR include:
- Facilitating the development of a flexible and accountable workforce that can deal with and be energized by the rapid pace of change.
- Facilitating the development of an IT-savvy workforce that uses productivity tools such as word processors, email, and the Internet effectively and creatively.
- Aiding the design of new operating models for the business and ensuring that technology implementation projects pay adequate attention to the human issues of work design, skills development, and performance measurement.
- Facilitating the development of technology leadership skills within the executive and management ranks of the organization.
This Re.sults® report explores the various
effects of information technology on people and the challenges of HR management
in information and technology intensive enterprises. It provides an action
agenda for HR, plus recommendations on managing HR’s own systems portfolio, and
